To ensure optimal machine functioning and reliability, Davenport produces high-performing, long-lasting machine heads made right here in the United States. We manufacture both oversize and high-precision (HP) heads, built to provide exceptional accuracy.
Davenport’s new HP heads improve upon our original revolving head design, featuring a more rigid spindle to allow for higher performance. Our oversize revolving heads, meanwhile, are designed to reduce friction and provide optimal durability. To ensure your operations perform at the highest possible level, day in and day out, we make use of the latest innovations in spindle construction and coating materials.
Below, we’ve outlined some of the key features and benefits of both our oversize heads and HP heads.
Oversize Machine Heads
When the bed casting supporting current Davenport revolving heads becomes worn down and the customer chooses to rebore (rather than banding and boring), we can now offer our new oversize revolving heads. After reboring, which will leave a head in the .010-inch to .030-inch range, clients can call Davenport for an oversize replacement head in the proper dimensions. Our team can fabricate both revolving and stationary heads up to .035 inch over original dimensions according to client specifications.
Oversize heads are hard-coated to better retain oil and reduce friction by more than 65%, and the bearing diameter bands feature a proprietary metallic hard-coating material that extends durability and accuracy. In addition, the use of various metallic interfaces — rather than a cast-iron head on a cast-iron bed — reduces galling and pickup on the bearing bands. In testing runs, no visible wear was seen on the hard-coated heads or scraped bores, even after more than a million parts were produced, and original oil-distribution scores from the scraping bar were still be visible.
To maintain optimal performance, it’s critical to check the locating blocks on the revolving head for block-to-block uniform location; this is achieved without removing the revolving head from the machine. More information on how to do so can be found in our free Tech Tips guide.
High-Precision (HP) Machine Head
The next generation of our revolving head assemblies, Davenport’s new HP machine head is built for unparalleled accuracy and longevity. Now standard with the five-spindle Davenport HP, this head features a new spindle design; unlike our standard 8-SA revolving heads, the HP model’s spindles feature super-precision angular radial bearings, arranged in a similar manner to those found in CNC lathe machines. These stiffer spindles allow for spindle runout consistently less than 0.0005 inch, with index repeatability within 0.0006 inch.
Other benefits include:
- Lower maintenance and operational costs
- Improved surface finish
- Less part taper and deflection
- Longer spindle life
Davenport’s HP machine heads ensure high part accuracy and repeatability in all Davenport HP machines, as well as Model B machines.
