The Situation:

The  Davenport Model B is virtually unchanged since its debut in 1927.
Its solid reputation of reliability and productivity makes it the hallmark of the industry, with many loyal advocates.

The Challenge:

- Improve the Model B

- Incorporate 21st Century Technology.
- Maintain recognizable Model B features using existing accessories.
- Provide familiarity in operation to allow for a smooth transition of operators to the new technology.

The Solution:

SERVO B FIVE SPINDLE
AUTOMATIC SCREW MACHINE

Designed to maximize production and increase the customer's ROI, the Servo Drive is a user-friendly combination of familiar, tried-and-true mechanics and 21st Century technology.

Teale Machine in Rochester, New York, is a participant in Davenport's Servo Drive pilot program. Teale Machine currently has two Servo Drive machines in operation at their facility. Doug Larson reports that setup of their second machine went so smoothly that setting spindle speed, feed rate and threading took only 10 minutes - with "no wrenches or dirty hands."

Initially, Larson was concerned with the transition of Teale operators from the Model B to the Servo. His operators states that the Servo Drive is not only faster and easier to run, but produces approximately 20% more parts than their Model B.

"The Servo Drive meets and exceeds our demanding criteria."
Doug Larson, Manufacturing Engineer

The Servo B offers significant advantages over conventional motor-driven machine.

A convenient and user-friendly Man/Machine Interface stores multiple job summaries, provides parts counters and tool life warnings.

An on-board PLC eliminates the chance of sending faulty instructions to the machine, greatly reducing the potential for downtime.

High productivity

"We easily reduced our cycle time by 30%, and production efficiency improved 15%"

Increased tool life

"We owe much of the improved efficiency to prolonged tool life by optimizing the surface speed. The ability to monitor tool life allows replacement or grinding of tooling before there is a failure"

Ease of operation

"The ease of operation is very apparent on these machines. If you're familiar with the Model B, there's a very short learning curve to operate the machine. The two operators running our machines have less than six years combined experience. They were able to learn the controls in a matter of hours."

From his observations,
Doug Larson is certain that
Davenport's Servo Machines
will meet his goals of
increased productivity and ROI at Teale Machine.

Precise speed control gives the ability to optimize cutting speeds with minimal changeovers. (Speed change gears have been eliminated.)

Cycle time can be changed instantly. (Feed change gear has been eliminated.)

Change index time instantly. Choose shift points of the index.

Servo Threading spindle are multi-functional (Stationary, Revolving Drill, Support, Broach and Threading.)

Tap ID or thread OD at an infinite number of speeds. Shift speed at any point when tapping.

Mechanical brakes and clutches are eliminated - Less maintenance and adjustments.

Bar ends controlled when stock depletion is selected. Feed latch automatically lifts and work collet will not open.

Indicators for low coolant, lube level, and lube pressure.

Quoting from the May issue of Automatic Machining magazine,

"...this new machine looks like a Model B, sets up and operates like a Model B, but offers productivity and flexibility possibilities which users of conventional five-spindle Davenports have never before enjoyed."
