This attachment gives you the ability to stop individual spindles while
the others continue to revolve. The ability to stop individual spindles
allows you to use other attachments to do operations such as cross drilling,
spindle locating and milling that are not possible with all spindles revolving.
You can also use stopping clutch’s to align hex material in the work spindles to a hex pick off collet.
The speed that your spindles are revolving is limited to 2500 rpm due
to the fact that you are disengaging and reengaging clutch’s in cycle. The stopping clutch’s can be left in the machine to run parts that do not require them, but should be routinely disengaged and reengaged to insure the clutch’s
function properly when needed.
INSTALLING SPINDLE STOPPING CLUTCHES
The 8-SA Work Spindle Head must be removed from the machine to install
Spindle Stopping Clutches. After removal, the head must be partially
disassembled. The Inner Spindles, Outer Spindles, Spindle Gears, Left
Slide Bracket 5080-400-3-1, Center Drive Shaft & Gear, and Tool Post
Stop 2186-SA must be removed. The 8-SA can then be set in a vertical
position resting on the Bearing Retainers 5080-389. The Ring Gear 936
will drop down, resting next to the Index Gear 5133. This will leave
an opening between the ribs of the head in which the clutches can be
installed. The Clutch Forks 2485-3 must fit freely between the ribs,
but with no side play. If the opening is tight, the ribs may have to
be filed to allow a slide fit. The Tool Post Stop 2186-SA will require
removal of the center drive bushing and installation of the Center Post
2496-4-6 (ref. Drawing 2496-57-SA). The Tool Post Stop 2186-SA is then
bolted to the 8-SA. The clutches are then inserted between the ribs with
the gear end down. The Forks 2485-3 will be retained in a slot turned
on the Center Post 2496-4-6. The gear end of the clutch can be tipped
toward the center of the head to allow the Ring Gear 936 to be raised
into a position where the spindle stopping clutch gears can be meshed
by tipping the clutches back to a vertical position. Support the Ring
Gear with blocks. Insert the outer spindles through the clutches and
secure with three cone point screws.
The outer spindles should be fitted into the clutches prior to assembly.
There may be some residue on old spindles which requires removal. All
parts removed from the 8-SA should be reinstalled in the same position.
The head can then be reassembled on the bench and reinstalled on the
machine.
In the future we will be featuring other attachments that will require
the use of the stopping clutch.
