This attachment is driven directly off the ring gear that is also driving the work spindles. This allows the cutter head to be timed to the work spindles allowing any number of flats to be cut depending on gearing ratio and # of cutter bits in the cutter head. The cutter head is balanced for speeds up to 6000 RPM. Speed change gears allow you the change the speed ratio of the cutter to the spindles. 6000 RPM max.
This attachment is not recommended for cutting steels (stainless or mild). The cutter bits do not hold up due to the nature of the cut. Brass and aluminum cut very well with this attachment.
Before installation of this attachment, extra machining of the revolving head cap is required. This can be done at the customers facility or at Davenport.
The flat generating attachment allows milled surfaces to be generated behind a shoulder of a part and oriented to one another if needed. The work spindles must be revolving to perform this operation.
Sample parts that can be produced with this attachment:
This can be used to generate various shapes or configurations of flats on either side of a part or on both sides. generated configurations can be, One flat (one cutter bit running 1 : 1) square(2 cutter bits running 2 : 1 or 4 cutter bits running 1 : 1) Hex(3 cutter bits running 2 : 1) octagon ( 2 cutter bits running 4 : 1 or 4 cutter bits running 2 : 1)
The cutter head is usually designed for an individual part but can be adapted from job to job depending on the configuration of the part.
The attachment is a fixed location attachment. Cutter bits should be designed with an offset that allows the cutter to cut in the location of the desired shape.
